Just got this Lexmark C544DW Color Laser Printer with Duplexing, Networking, and Wireless.

DisasterBy Todd GreenWhile advertised as being compatible with the Macintosh operating system, the installation manual's instructions for getting the wireless system working do not work. I needed to use Lexmark's live chat (and allow them to wire in to my computer) to get it working using a completely different installation procedure. Then within a few weeks, the wireless network card began having problems and I needed to resort to live chat again. The technician told me there was NO way to install the printer on a Mac, even though I'd already done it. Almost three hours later, while trying to access a menu on the printer that apparently does not actually exist, the printer started printing from the queue on its own. The technician declared the printer fixed. Within an hour, it stopped working again. The error code clearly says the network card has an unrecoverable error and needs to be replaced, but Lexmark keeps sending me new things to try to get it working. So now I can only use my wireless printer when it is connected by USB cable.On the positive side, print quality is excellent. Great printer for the moneyBy XavierIt's hard to believe that a network-ready color laser printer can be had for under $500. A few years ago these were $5000 and up. This is an excellent printer that produces very nice quality text and graphics. Photographic output is not quite up to the level of the best inkjets, but then no laser really is. If you add up the cost of frequent inkjet cartridge replacements, then it makes economic sense to consider a laser printer.The C510n is noisy during startup and operation, but powers down to a silent sleep state. Network operations are flawless, although setup differed somewhat from the printed directions (I had to set up a generic Windows network port rather than use the Lexmark port, but either works fine.) It works equally well with Macintosh and Windows (I have both). As I said, quality is great, and once warmed up, it is FAST. It has a couple of gotchas, which caused us massive grief for a few months.If you print via the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP), the printer will crash periodically on seemingly random jobs. When it crashes, it doesn't automatically reboot. Reconfiguring your print server or desktops to use the LPD (or other protocols) will fix the problem. Lexmark has all but forgotten about this printer, and hasn't offered a software update since May of '07, and the frequent crashes are not addressed on their support site, but *are* mentioned all over the internet. :-)We are a PostScript based shop (but really just print Word and Excel documents), and this printer's emulation software is adequate, but unbelievably slow. I wrote some simple PostScript test pages which fly out of our other printers, but not the T640. When warmed up, time to first page varies from 5 to 60 seconds.The printer is *very* eager to print. The moment a print job starts downloading, the fans, rollers and drum fire up in anticipation. Then they shut off twenty seconds later because the PostScript interpreter hasn't finished rasterizing the page.
